Wound healing without surgery and with immediate pain relief

Brief description
A-SKIN is a spin-off company of the VU University Medical Center (VUmc), Departments of Dermatology and Pathology. A-SKIN is a tissue engineering company which develops novel human skin culturing techniques and unique cultured skin products for the treatment of wounds, oral defects and wound bed vitalization. A-SKIN satisfies the high unmet medical need for rapid healing of complex and hard-to-heal wounds. A-SKIN products significantly reduce patients’ pain and discomfort, minimize hospitalization and thus improve the quality of life.

Unique selling point
Hard to heal wounds represent a major problem in Western society. These wounds are mostly venous, pressure or diabetes induced wounds. There is a high incidence of these wounds, and this increases further due to aging. The first cultured skin product of A-SKIN, Tiscover^®, offers a major breakthrough and affordable solution for healing long-lasting and hard-to-heal wounds. Tiscover^® is the first autologous full thickness skin substitute. The benefits of Tiscover^® lie in its unique characteristics: usage of the patient’s own skin, and full thickness skin.

Tiscover^® vitalizes healing and can grow in the wound bed and has proven to be successful in stimulating inert wounds and healing chronic wounds, venous/arterial ulcers and pressure ulcers (foot).  

Current stage of R&D
A multi centre trial is currently performed at six medical centers. A Pilot study in long term care facilities with a wide range of wound types will start in Q1 of 2008. Healthcare insurance companies are willing to participate in best practice studies using Tiscover^®: AGIS participates in a healthcare innovation project at VU University medical centre Amsterdam.
